Vienna Schubert Trio

The Vienna Schubert Trio brought Boris Kuschnir together with pianist Claus-Christian Schuster and cellist Martin Hornstein. Founded in 1984, the ensemble performed until 1993, appearing across Europe, North America and Asia.

In 1985 it won first prize at the International Sergio Lorenzi Chamber Music Competition in Trieste, with Sándor Végh chairing the jury. The Mozart Interpretation Prize of the Mozart Society of Vienna followed in 1988, and the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s advancement award in 1990.

From 1988 the trio presented its own concert series at the Vienna Musikverein. Other appearances included Wigmore Hall in London, the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonie and Sviatoslav Richter’s December Festival in Moscow. Alongside established piano trios, it performed less frequently heard works by composers such as Lili Boulanger, Paul Juon and Philipp Scharwenka.

A central document of this collaboration is the complete recording of Mozart’s piano trios, released by EMI for the Mozart anniversary in 1991.
